Sunday · November 1, 2026 · 08:00 CST market cutoff

Yesterday, West exploded.
Today, the South carries the premium.

October 31's West Hub five-minute real-time price averaged $86.77/MWh, more than $35 above North. But the already-cleared November 1 day-ahead auction puts South highest at $36.65/MWh while West falls toward $5/MWh by the final hour. The clock change creates 25 delivery hours—and a data-quality trap.

The morning thesis. The October 31 West spike was a realized-location event, not proof of statewide shortage. Today's South–North day-ahead basis averages +$7.65/MWh, and the Sunday market expects West's final hour at $5.18/MWh. Monday's 64.44 GW forecast is the next demand test. Compare like-for-like products; 5-minute LMPs are not 15-minute SPPs or day-ahead quotes. [14][20][23]

03 / LOAD, WEATHER, RESERVES & CONGESTION

Monday is the demand watch.

7-DAY FORECAST · ERCOT-DERIVED MIRROR

Daily projected system peaks

Today 61.72 GW vs yesterday's completed 59.795 GW observed peak: +1.92 GW, +3.2% (forecast vs realized, not like-for-like). Monday's 64.44 GW forecast is +2.72 GW (+4.4%) above Sunday's forecast. [20]

Ask the Grid's ERCOT-derived seven-day forecast (Nov 1 06:30 CST run; Sunday from the Oct 31 23:30 CDT run) puts daily peaks between 64.44 GW on Mon Nov 2 and 52.06 GW on Sat Nov 7. [20]

GRID DATA QUALITY

Reserves and outage MW are not verified.

ERCOT's supply/demand and generation-outage dashboards expose only static text or “Loading…” in this retrieval. The grid-conditions endpoint returned 403. No current reserve margin, reserve MW or forced outage total is asserted. An advisory-like third-party operator status is not proof of an emergency. [6][10][11]

Weather's load effect

Houston's Nov 1–2 highs are forecast in the low 80s °F, followed by a Tuesday front and increased rain chances. This is a weather forecast, not a measured power price. With the 64.44-GW Monday load peak, weather-sensitive afternoon demand deserves attention. [26][20]

The third-party demand mirror displayed a spurious 97.68-GW “record” at 01:00 on the DST changeover while its actual daily peak table showed 48.84 GW so far. The former is rejected as a clock/aggregation anomaly, not reported as a real record. [20]

Transmission / congestion

Today's South–North DAM premium +$7.65/MWh is measurable basis, but it does not establish which constraint caused it. The official current shadow-price report was inaccessible. Older Oct 22 third-party observations recorded BLESSING 1382 at $1,104/MWh shadow price; Oct 20 CONCHO HARI1 A at $2,503/MWh. These are historical examples, not Nov 1 conditions. [14][8][36]

Planning horizon

ERCOT's 75-MW+ Batch Zero process and RWE's ~5-GW flexible gas project pipeline illustrate longer-term large-load and firming investment themes. Neither should be mistaken for capacity that can relieve this afternoon's prices. [28][33]

What the supplier reports disagree on

Constellation (Oct 26) lists NYMEX Cal27–31 at $3.00, $3.63, $3.66, $3.65, $3.61/MMBtu. Vistra's Oct 23 landing says Cal27 power eased while Cal28–30 strengthened. Its linked “full report,” however, is dated Oct 9, with Houston Cal27 $48.67 and Cal29 $55.61/MWh as of Oct 8 (PDF p.1). Do not treat that PDF as an Oct 23 quote. [2][1][29]

Calpine (Oct 29 PDF p.1) describes term gas down $0.10–$0.15/MMBtu over its Oct 22–28 comparison. [32]

ICE #06439R: long 63,277, short 5,245. Weekly net change −4,489 contracts (long −3,904; short +585). Contract definitions and peak-hour exposures matter; not directly comparable to gas lots. [35]

Generator strategy

RWE's August 2026 Factbook (pp. 20–21) details 15 flexible-gas projects totaling approximately 5 GW in development, targeting 3+ GW execution by 2035 across ERCOT, MISO, PJM and WECC. Factbook pp. 78–83 explains storage revenue from intraday spreads, grid services and capacity; these are strategic plans, not operating assets today. [33]

Regulatory / infrastructure watch

CFTC's current weekly page lists newly reported Nodal Exchange ERCOT South and West on/off-peak contracts. A newly reported contract is not evidence of new physical capacity. ERCOT's Batch Zero framework covers requests ≥75 MW; the August/September data-center impact RFI targeted ≥25 MW projects with a Dec 10 report target. [17][27][28]

06 / TEXAS RESIDENTIAL RETAIL

Retail comparisons: evidence before headline rates.

Retail plan prices change daily and depend on ZIP code, usage and contract terms. This report does not list retail plans or prices. To compare current plans, use each plan's Electricity Facts Label (EFL) or the PUCT's Power to Choose website, powertochoose.org.

07 / WHAT THE DATA MEANS

Four audiences. Specific numbers. Real trade-offs.

RESIDENTIAL CONSUMERS

A $51/MWh wholesale jump does not reprice your fixed contract overnight.

  • Measured: Oct 31 West LMP averaged $86.77/MWh, up $51.12 from Oct 30, while November 1 DAM West averages $29.17 across a different product/day. Effect: do not extrapolate either into tomorrow's household bill. [23][14]
COMMERCIAL CONSUMERS

Southern load shape and zone basis matter more than a statewide average.

  • Measured: Nov 1 South–North DAM average basis +$7.65/MWh; at HE14 it widens to +$17.98. Illustration: 10 MWh delivered at that HE14 difference represents $179.80 in location-price difference before contractual adjustments. [14]
  • Measured: Nov 2 peak forecast 64.44 GW, +2.72 GW over Sunday forecast. Context: product types (fixed, indexed, block-plus-index) can carry different load-zone and interval exposure. [20]
ELECTRICITY BROKERS

Show both the spike and the curve reversal.

  • Measured: Oct 31 West–North real-time LMP mean +$35.63/MWh, but Nov 1 day-ahead West–North mean is only +$0.17/MWh and turns −$14.26 at HE23. Effect: illustrate volatility and product differences rather than selling a false 'trend.' [21][23][14]
INVESTORS / ASSET OWNERS

Scarcity and storage are conditional, not automatic profits.

  • Measured: Nov 1 North DAM HE1 $51.44 vs HE12 $14.71/MWh, a $36.73 gross spread. [14]
  • Measured: CFTC NYMEX gas managed money net short 206,317 contracts, up 48,908 net shorts week-on-week; EIA +80 Bcf storage. [34][19]
08 / RISK WATCHLIST

Three things that could change the call.

01 / Monday ramp

Nov 2 forecast peak 64.44 GW, above Sunday's 61.72 GW. Watch weather revisions and actual load as Monday approaches. [20]

02 / Basis is hourly

South–North HE14 +$17.98; West–North HE23 −$14.26. Check local constraints before assuming daily averages capture risk. [14]

03 / Incomplete live operations

Reserve margin, outage MW and current binding constraint shadow prices were not accessible. A lack of numbers is not evidence of abundant reserves. [6][8][11]
