Who delivers electricity in Grand Prairie?
Grand Prairie sits between Dallas and Fort Worth, and Oncor is its transmission and distribution utility (TDU). Oncor owns the wires and meters; in areas open to retail choice, your bill comes from the retail provider you pick, with Oncor’s delivery charges included.

Can I choose my electricity provider in Grand Prairie?
Eligibility is decided by the service address. Grand Prairie spans Dallas and Tarrant counties, and some of its ZIP codes also cover neighboring cities, so a ZIP code alone does not settle which plans you can get.

Weather and electricity in Grand Prairie
Typical weather near Grand Prairie, from the nearest NOAA station with a complete 1991-2020 record: Joe Pool Lake, about 4 miles from the city center (station elevation 591 ft). These are normals for that station, not readings at your address. August is the warmest month on average, with a normal daily high of 97°F; January has the coolest average low, 33°F. Average daily highs reach 90°F or more in June to September. No month averages a daily low at or below freezing.
For electricity, the normals point to two seasons that can lift a household's usage: cooling-degree days (a measure of how far each day's mean temperature sits above 65°F) peak in August at 609 for the month, and heating-degree days (below 65°F) peak in January at 607. How much that matters to a bill depends on the home, its insulation, its heating fuel and the household, so use your own usage history, not a regional average, when you compare plans.

Common questions
Can every address in Grand Prairie choose an electricity provider?
Not automatically. Grand Prairie spans two counties and several of its ZIP codes reach into neighboring cities, so the ZIP code alone does not settle it. Enter your ZIP code, then your service address.
How many homes in Grand Prairie have electric service on the competitive market?
ERCOT’s TDSP ESIID Extract lists 75,166 active residential electric meters (ESI IDs) with a Grand Prairie address (October 5, 2026), roughly one per home or apartment with a retail electricity provider.
Is Grand Prairie in Dallas County or Tarrant County?
Both. In ERCOT’s extract, 47,457 active residential meters with a Grand Prairie address are in Dallas County and 27,009 are in Tarrant County, all on Oncor’s system.
Do the wires or the delivery utility change if I switch providers?
No. The delivery utility, Oncor, keeps the same wires and still delivers the electricity, and its delivery charges still appear on your bill. Switching changes the retail provider that bills you, not the wires.
